Ireland Golf Trip by Private Plane: Kerry to Portrush

The classic Irish golf trip is a scheduled seat to Dublin or Shannon, a hire car, and a day of motorway before the first tee. The courses people actually want, Ballybunion, Waterville, Lahinch, Royal Portrush, sit on the Atlantic edge, hours from the big airports.

An Ireland golf trip by private jet changes that, with one clarification. We mean light jets and turboprops, not Gulfstreams. From the London area, Kerry, Shannon and Derry are all about 300 to 360 nautical miles away, so a King Air or a Citation gets you there in well under two hours. The aircraft is the easy part. The customs rules, the bag space and the tee-time diary are where trips go wrong.

Which airport do you fly into for the Irish golf courses?

For the south-west links, Kerry Airport (EIKY) and Shannon (EINN) are the two that matter, and they work well together. For Royal Portrush and Portstewart in the north, City of Derry (EGAE) is the nearest airport with a long runway and an instrument approach.

Kerry has a 2,000 m asphalt runway, 08/26 (Wikipedia, Airfield Directory). That is generous for any turboprop and for light jets up to a Citation or Phenom. The airport runs a dedicated Kerry Executive Handling service with a lounge, fuel and help with customs and immigration. It is not slot constrained. Shannon is the other end of the scale: Ireland's longest runway at about 3,200 m, open 24 hours, with Universal and Signature handling on the field (Shannon Group). City of Derry has a 1,967 m runway with an ILS (airport).

Flight times below are our own estimates from great-circle distance and typical cruise speeds, from a London-area airfield such as Farnborough or Biggin Hill. Road times are also estimates from map distances, so ask your driver to confirm.

AirportFrom London areaTurboprop / light jetCourses and road transfer (estimate)
    Kerry (EIKY)about 330 nm1h25 to 1h35 / 1h05 to 1h15Ballybunion about 50 min; Tralee, Dooks, Killarney 25 to 40 min; Waterville about 1h15
    Shannon (EINN)about 315 nm1h20 to 1h30 / 1h05 to 1h15Lahinch about 1h; Adare Manor 20 to 30 min
    Cork (EICK)about 290 nm1h15 to 1h25 / 1h to 1h10Old Head of Kinsale about 50 min to 1h
    City of Derry (EGAE)about 355 nm1h30 to 1h45 / 1h10 to 1h20Royal Portrush and Portstewart about 45 min to 1h

A Kerry-to-Shannon hop is only about 40 nautical miles, roughly 15 to 20 minutes in the air. That makes an open-jaw trip easy. Fly into Kerry, play Ballybunion, Tralee and Waterville, then move the aircraft to Shannon for Lahinch and fly home from there. It saves a long day's drive between the two coasts.

Ballybunion to Lahinch by road can also be shortened by the car ferry across the Shannon estuary at Tarbert. Check its timetable and the tide before you rely on it.

Royal Portrush and Portstewart: the northern leg

Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so London to Derry is a domestic flight. There is no customs, and no Border Force report. The practical difference with the Republic is real paperwork saved.

Royal Portrush is under 30 miles from the airport according to Derry's own golf material, which in practice means about 45 minutes to an hour by road. Portstewart is a few miles further along the same coast, about 15 minutes from Royal Portrush by Portstewart Golf Club's own figures. Belfast airports are the alternative, but Portstewart's club lists about 90 minutes by road from Belfast City, so Derry usually wins for these two.

Derry also has corporate aviation coordinators who handle private flights (corporate.aviation@cityofderryairport.com). Opening hours are published in the AIP and include scheduled breaks with no movements, so confirm them against your arrival and departure times. We could not verify the current hours.

Royal Portrush hosted the Open in 2025 and its green fee has climbed since. Event weeks are a different problem, covered in St Andrews for the 2027 Open by private flight, but the rule from that guide applies here too: pick the aircraft after the tee times, not before.

Can you fly privately from London to Ireland without a customs stop?

Not freely, no. A flight from Great Britain to the Republic of Ireland is an international flight on both sides, even though the Common Travel Area removes routine passport checks for British and Irish citizens. There are two sets of rules.

The UK side. Under the current Border Force guidance (published June 2026), the operator must submit a General Aviation Report (GAR) for any flight between the UK and Ireland, no earlier than 48 hours and no later than 2 hours before departure. That is done through the gov.uk sGAR service or an approved app. If the UK airfield is not police designated, there are extra steps. A private flight not operating for reward needs a GAR at least 12 hours ahead. A charter flight operating for reward needs prior approval from a Police Examining Officer. Your operator should know which category applies and which airfield, but ask.

The Irish side. Since Brexit, a UK flight is a non-EU arrival for Irish customs. Irish Revenue says aircraft arriving from outside the State may only use approved places. Type I customs airports are Dublin, Cork and Shannon. Type II includes Kerry, Knock, Donegal, Sligo, Waterford, Weston and Kilkenny, along with a number of smaller aerodromes. That is why the south-west plan runs through Kerry and Shannon, and not a grass strip near the course.

Type II airports come with conditions. Revenue's Civil Aviation Manual (reviewed November 2025) sets out template conditions requiring the airport operator to give Revenue at least 24 hours' notice of each non-EU arrival or departure, with the aircraft registration and the names of crew and passengers. Individual airports may have their own variations, and Kerry's exact current arrangement is not published on its handling page. We could not verify it, so we ask the airport directly. Kerry's own page says it will assist with customs and immigration, and independent airfield listings say customs is available on request with notice.

Practical consequence: passenger names and passport details go to the operator well over a day before departure, not at the airport. Arrive with passports regardless of nationality. Ireland says that all passengers arriving are subject to immigration control, even if British and Irish citizens move without routine checks. If anyone in the group is not a British or Irish citizen, do not assume a UK visa covers Ireland. The Irish Immigration Service sets its own rules, and our visa team can check before you commit to dates.

What aircraft fits four golfers and their bags?

For four golfers with full bags, a King Air or a Pilatus PC-12 is the safe choice. Light jets work for two or three, and only if the baggage door is checked first.

A golf bag in a travel cover is typically about 1.3 m long and 15 to 20 kg when packed with a spare layer or two. Payload is rarely the problem on a short flight. The problem is the door and the compartment.

AircraftTypical seatsBag spaceGolf verdict (our rule of thumb)
Pilatus PC-126 to 8Large cargo door, accessible baggage areaFour sets and soft luggage, usually fine
King Air 200 / 3507 to 8About 55 cu ft on a 350, lockers behind the enginesGood for a group of four
Citation Mustang4Small compartmentTwo sets at most, one is safer
Citation CJ36 to 7About 65 cu ftThree to four sets, confirm door size
Citation XLS8Largest of the comparable jetsPrivateFly says it can take eight sets

The cubic feet figures come from operator listings, the PrivateFly golf-clubs-in-a-Mustang guide and charter-fleet pages, and none of them substitutes for the operator's confirmation. Ask for the baggage door dimensions and say how many bags, in what sort of cases, up front.

A turboprop is usually the right call on this route. At 300 to 360 nautical miles the jet saves 15 to 25 minutes, which a Kerry-to-Ballybunion drive wipes out. The full reasoning is in our turboprop versus light jet guide. Bags are the classic mistake on golf charters, which is why the question comes first.

How far ahead do you book tee times at Ballybunion, Lahinch and Portrush?

As early as you can, and before the aircraft. The famous links do not hold tee times for people whose plane has already been booked.

The club rules differ more than most visitors expect.

Ballybunion Old Course takes visitors in the morning, Monday to Friday, from mid-April to early October, excluding Bank Holiday Mondays. Weekends belong to members. The 2026 fee is €450 in high season. Prepayment is required, and the club's own visitor page says a full refund is only available if you cancel more than six months before play. It does not state a booking lead time, though guides suggest booking a year ahead. At least one caddie per group is required, a senior caddie is €110 for one bag, and handicap limits are 24 for men and 36 for women.

Lahinch Old Course takes visitors every day of the week in the 2026 season, at €450, with at least one caddie required per group (Lahinch). Booking is through the club's online system.

Royal Portrush is more restrictive by day. On the Dunluce, visitors cannot book on Wednesdays, Friday is mornings only, Saturday is after 3 pm and Sunday is after 1 pm. The 2026 fee is £420, payable in full on booking and non-refundable (Royal Portrush).

Old Head of Kinsale accepts visitors daily from mid-April to the end of October, with prepayment and a handicap certificate. Reported 2026 fees are around €500, and the Irish Times has put 2027 at €550. Treat both as press figures, and check with the club (Old Head).

Waterville accepts visitors every day, with listings showing roughly €400 to €425 on weekdays and at weekends, but we found no official online booking page, so call the club.

The lesson is to build the trip around the hardest course. Ballybunion's weekday mornings and Portrush's Wednesday gap decide your days. Then add the airport times. It is the same logic as Islay's Machrie: the golf drives the flight, not the other way round.

One date to avoid: the Ryder Cup is at Adare Manor, near Limerick, from 13 to 19 September 2027, with the matches on 17 to 19 September (Ryder Cup). Shannon is the obvious airport for it. Expect ramp space, hotels and tee times in the area to tighten in the week before.

What does an Ireland golf trip by private plane cost?

Plan on roughly £4,000 to £11,000 for the flying alone on a there-and-back trip with a turboprop or light jet, split across four golfers. That is indicative market pricing, not a quote.

The sums come from the hourly ranges in our UK charter cost guide: turboprops from about £1,400 to £3,400 an hour, and light jets from £2,200 to £3,600. A London to Kerry sector is about 1.5 hours. If the aircraft stays with you, the flying is about three hours return, so £4,200 to £10,800 depending on type and operator. Add Irish landing and handling fees, crew night-stops for a multi-night trip, any waiting charge, and positioning if the aircraft returns to base and comes back for you. Those are the lines that swing the total, so ask for them itemised.

For four golfers, that is roughly £1,000 to £2,750 each for the aircraft. Green fees at the courses above come to about €400 to €500 each per round, with caddies on top. Whether the aircraft is worth it depends on what you are replacing. A scheduled flight plus a drive from Dublin or Shannon eats most of a day each way. A private flight lands you about 50 minutes from Ballybunion on the morning you want it.

Weather is the other cost. This is the Atlantic coast, and the wind and sea fog do not respect itineraries. Kerry also closes in the evening: its hours are reported as 0800 to 1700 UTC in summer (0900 to 1800 local) and 0900 to 1800 UTC in winter. Check the AIP. Leave a buffer day on a trip that has a fixed return, and avoid planning the last tee time of the trip around the last departure.

What Sulu does for an Irish golf trip

The work is in the sequence. Tee times first, because they are the scarce thing. Then the airports, the customs notice, the sGAR and the Irish notification, the aircraft that fits the bags, the driver at each end, and a weather fallback.

That is what Sulu does. We use the best intelligence available to research the options and check the rules, and then people make the calls to the operator, the airport, the club and the driver. Fast, and checked by a person before it reaches you. If a front closes Kerry on the morning, we are the ones rebooking.
